Green-tongue Liverwort - Marchantia polymorpha are the largest thalloid liverwort in western Canada. They grow in wet areas such as stream banks and wetlands. It is commonly the first plant to grow in environments regenerating after a forest fire. It renews the humus and improves soil quality, leading the way to a healthy forest recovery.
They are dioicous, growing both male and female reproductive gametophores on separate plants. Both are illustrated in the painting, the male being flat topped and scalloped and the female being star shaped with rays curving down.
Original paintings may have slight marks on the paper outside of the painted image. I do my best to keep them clean while working and only select the pieces that are white clean. A minimal mark from an eraser is sometimes visible.
