A number of different Lichen Species can be found growing on rocks. They can be specific to different rock types depending on their mineral makeup, many being found on acidic rocks including quartz, basalt and granite.
Lichens are a composite organism of algae or cyanobacteria that have established a mutualistic relationship with fungi. Lichen have unique characteristics from their components. The Fungi provides protective structure and nutrients and the algae or cyanobacteria provide carbohydrates derived from photosynthesis. Lichen can grow nearly everywhere and are often one of the first living things to grow on bare rock or in environments effected by disaster.
Original paintings may have slight marks on the paper outside of the painted image. I do my best to keep them clean while working and only select the pieces that are white clean. A minimal mark from an eraser is sometimes visible.
