These Arctic birds of prey often travel south in the winter in search of prey. Unlike most owls they are active during both the day and night, likely due to the need to hunt in the long hours of sunlight during the Arctic summer. The males are mostly white with sparse flecks of black while the females are white with a more dense pattern of black flecks.
