These hares are aptly named as their large hind feet with widely spread toes help them travel easily over deep snow, similar to snowshoes. They have a special adaptation that allows them to change the colour of their coat from grey-brown in summer to white in winter. This helps them match their surroundings, camouflaging them from predators.
