Calypso Orchids are native to most of Canada. They require a mycorrhizal fungus in order to grow. Their small seeds provide little nutrition so they rely on the fungus for additional nutrients. They prefer drier forests compared to many other orchids and are found growing under conifer trees in the alpine and foothills in Alberta. The orchid does not produce nectar but their fragrant flowers attract and deceive bees into pollinating them.
