These highly adapted northern bears have black skin despite their white appearance. Their hair is translucent and reflects light to their dark, heat absorbing skin which helps them moderate their temperature in the frigid environment. Their white colour is also a useful camouflage for hunting and the bumps and pockets on the soles of their feet act as suction cups on the ice.
