Fungi have complex relationships with plants and animals making them critical to healthy ecosystems. Most commonly known are a small percentage of fungi species that produce reproductive fruiting bodies called mushrooms. Mushrooms emerge seasonally depending on the species. They are an indicator of the larger organism that grows below the surface of the organic matter that the mushrooms emerge from. This part of the fungus consists of long, fine strands of hyphae, which collectively form the mycelium.
